Hot Hapa

My husband and I got into the topic of dopplegangers the other night and we decided to search online for people who might look like us. My husband Robert is half Spanish/Mexican and Native American/Mexican. I am hapa...half Korean and supposedly Dutch and Native American. (don't know my father...long story). The term hapa means someone of part Asian and Caucasian descent.

We ended up searching for other hapas online and did not find a doppleganger but were delighted by all the combos-the good and the bad. I don't have any pics of what we found because we were on his computer. Let me just say that our favorite was a mix of Australian and Tibetan. She was a fox.

These are some of my finds:

Rachel Rutt

half English, half Singaporean

What a doll. I love to see the different features people inherit from their heritage.

Rachel Rutt is another young one from down under, like Zippora Seven. This 17-year-old was all the talk at Australian Fashion Week 2009. She is causing quite the stir and I can see why.

Charlotte Carey

half indonesian and half english

She has great lines and skyscraper legs. Charlotte Carey is only 17 and hails from LA.

velvet

PhotobucketPhotobucketGivenchy fall 09 coutoure

I'm excited to see velvet making a comeback. I painted my first velvet paintings a few weeks ago. There is almost nothing online on the process but it turned out great. I love the soft feel of velvet and its deep textures. Finding vintage velvet dresses is pretty easy just so long as the fit is tight.

beads and sequins

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketI collect vintage beads and sequins so it only blows my mind to see their clever use in Miu Miu's fall collection. It's time to buy some socks and get busy.

men

PhotobucketAlexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2009

"Dark, theatrical and full of tradition. These can only begin to describe Alexander McQueen’s latest collection for men. With every design fathered in his mind, McQueen manages to establish a sense of traditionalism while introducing refreshing touches. Touches such as the cropped and cuffed trousers and the slim fit that will later become the trends to follow. All of the looks seemed to have escaped from Sweeney Todd, A Clockwork Orange or Gangs of New York and acquired a very typically British old-school tailoring air. It seems like the great British minds of design find in obscurity and sordidness the manner in which to reflect their vision of the world.

There is an outfit for every 1880’s guild —trilby hats and walking sticks for the high classes, leather aprons for the butcher, boxing gloves and sweatpants for the sportsman, leather Romanesque breastplates for the fighter. The twist? Exquisite craftsmanship and a sense of noir violence. Smoky eyes are harmoniously combined with British classics like the three-piece suit, the double-chested coat with fur neck or the mackintosh. Such diversity in garments from different epochs may seem like Historically inconsistent were it not for McQueen’s exceptional abilities. He brings together garments from different periods not only carrying off a cohesive collection but also producing utterly desirable pieces anyone would exchange for a kidney in a heartbeat."

sweetheart

Shame on you Topshop for having so many cute things I enjoy but can't buy. But that's good because that keeps my bank account safe. The sweetheart cut is one of my favorites. It accentuates your curves and hugs your body.

I'm still obsessing over lingerie as clothes and noticed Topshop has a bunch of bralets up!!! These would be perfect with a pair of skin tight pants/shiny leggings and a oversized cardigan. $40 each. Get them here.

four desires

1. Nails

Matte Black Nails

Halloween is over but all those horror flicks have left a gothic residue behind. Winter is approaching and to embrace my pale skin, this is fantastic.

All manicured fingers point to Mike Potter, an NYC makeup artist who spent years putting ebony nail polish on big stars (Karen O.) and big screens (Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

When he couldn’t find a truly matte version without any gleam or gloss, Potter created Knock Out cosmetics. His addictive Flatte Black nail paint is shiny when wet but dries sans shimmer with one coat. (Imagine the look of fresh charcoal.)

Find it here.

2. Lips

Safety Orange Lips

A pop of one of my favorite colors. Take a cue from nature and go orange. If you've got a very dark skin tone, you can take much stronger orange lip colours; punchy colours look amazing on dark skin tones. For those of us with paler skin, warm up your skin with some bronzer first and then try a less pigmented orange or even a gloss in the peach or coral family like Make Up For Ever's Super Lip Gloss in Iridescent Orange Beige 21 ($16) or Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Safety Orange Lip Tar ($13). Ease into it by using it alone or blend it with a classic red shade if you're feeling more daring.

Don't forget: go really light on the rest of your makeup.

Find it here.

3. Party Hair

Curls, big volume, vintage styles.

4. Sumptuous Ruffles

Le Coquette Ruffled Scarf. Get it here.

(CHANEL fall 09)
Victorian delicate ruffled collars, bracelets, necklaces and headbands. They can add lots of texture to simple outfits. I've been busy making a bunch and will post them on my etsy shop soon.
